A Hammonton, New Jersey police officer has been suspended and indicted on charges of official misconduct, theft, tampering with evidence and related offenses after, officials claim, he stole methamphetamine and oxycodone from a police evidence room.
In a statement, the Atlantic County Prosecutor’s Office said Robert Zbikowski, 47, of Hammonton, NJ, has neem charged after he, allegedly, used his position as evidence custodian to steal narcotics stored within the Hammonton Police Department evidence room.
He has been suspended officials said.
An investigation began, officials said, after Zbikowski failed a routine drug screening in February of 2024.
Through the course of this investigation, police claim, from October of 2023 through his suspension in February of 2024, Zbikowski is believed to have tampered with numerous bags of suspected narcotics in the evidence room.
Officials said that, during an audit of the department’s evidence room, multiple bags of suspected methamphetamine and oxycodone were found to have been tampered with or were missing entirely.
An investigation, officials said, is ongoing.
