PennDOT crews are continuing work on a yearslong $329 million I-95 CAP project and starting Sunday night, that work will cause closures in the evenings along I-95, officials said.
In a statement, PennDOT announced that, due to overhead construction needed to create a 11.5 acre green space in Philly’s Old City neighborhood, there will be closures along I-95 south and the ramp that connects I-676 east to I-95 south starting this week.
Officials said drivers should be alert for the following restictions:
- Sunday, April 12, through Thursday, April 16, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, I-95 South will be closed between the I-676 Central Philadelphia/Callowhill Street (Exit 22) and Washington Avenue/Columbus Boulevard (Exit 20) interchanges. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use the I-676 West ramp (Exit 22), turn left onto Callowhill Street, turn right onto Columbus Boulevard, and then use the I-95 South ramp at Water/Morris streets.
- Sunday, April 12, through Thursday, April 16, from 11 p.m. to 5 a.m. the following morning, the ramp from I-676 East to I-95 South will be closed and detoured. During the closure, motorists will be directed to use the 6th Street ramp, turn left onto Race Street, turn right onto Columbus Boulevard, and then use the I-95 South ramp at Water/Morris streets.
During the closures, officials said, workers will install overhead jacks and sign structures as part of the project to replace and expand the covered area of I-95, from Chestnut to Walnut street.
