New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has made it through his first major challenge since taking office, leading the city through a historic winter storm that dumped over a foot of snow in some areas over the weekend.
At a press conference Monday, Mamdani was asked what he learned about the city and its resources.
“”Most of our attention when it comes to a storm like this is when the snow is falling, but the only way that you can actually respond to the level of snowfall that we saw is that if you prepare for it,” Mamdani said.
“Our city government’s ability to meet this moment is important because of the leadership of everyone up here,” Mamdani added, gesturing to members of his administration behind him.
“There’s also, in large part, frankly, because of the work of the men and women whose names most New Yorkers will never know. Whose work they will never see,” Mamdani said.
The mayor was then asked what he learned about himself and his leadership style.
“That people care a lot if I don’t wear a hat,” the mayor quipped, referring to social media comments surrounding his lack of a winter hat while helping drivers shovel their cars out of the snow in Brooklyn.
“I will tell you, I was brushing it off, then towards the end of the day, my hair started to freeze and I did put on a nice beanie and I was much warmer. So I appreciate the feedback, I will take it moving forward,” Mamdani said with a laugh.
