An incoming nor’easter could bring blizzard conditions to the New York City area this weekend, dropping more than a foot of snow on sidewalks only just cleared of last month’s monster storm.
Mayor Zohran Mamdani says the city has increased protocols to remove snow, shelter the homeless and keep the city running during a major snow event. To help in that response, he’s also put out a call for emergency snow shovelers.
“You too can become an emergency snow shoveler,” Mamdani said Saturday in a plea for New Yorkers to step up during the storm. “Just show up at your local sanitation garage between 8 a.m. and 1 p.m. tomorrow with your paperwork.”
The Department of Sanitation pays $19.14 per hour of shoveling plus overtime ($28.71 after 40 hours in a week).
Interested shovelers must meet the following eligibility requirements:
- At least 18 years old
- Eligible to work in the United States
- Able to perform heavy physical labor
And bring the following documents at time of registration:
- Two small photos (1-1/2 inch square)
- Two original forms of ID, plus copies
- Social Security card
More information on becoming an emergency snow shoveler can be found at nyc.gov/snow.
Snowfall rates could hit up to 2 inches an hour at times. A blizzard warning is issued when snow accumulations are expected between 13 and 18 inches and winds are expected to gust as high as 55 mph. This drops visibility below 1/4 mile, and whiteout conditions are expected. More on the timeline here.
Travel will be treacherous and potentially life-threatening, the National Weather Service said. The blizzard warning takes effect at 1 p.m. Sunday and lasts through 6 p.m. Monday. Check the latest severe weather alerts for your neighborhood here.
