The off-duty NYPD officer who allegedly opened fire on a group of people in the Bronx whom he suspected of stealing his car earlier this week, leaving one man in critical condition, has been suspended without pay, authorities confirmed Wednesday.
The officer, whose name has not been released, was initially put on modified duty following the Monday night incident at West 231st Street near Albany Crescent in the Bronx’s Kingsbridge neighborhood.
Law enforcement sources say the trouble started after the off-duty officer apparently spotted several men inside a car whom he believed were involved in the theft of his own vehicle, according to sources.
Surveillance video from the scene appears to show the off-duty officer pulling up behind the white car and approaching the driver with a weapon drawn.
The white vehicle moves, which is when investigators said a gun was fired. A 30-year-old man was hit in the head. The victim was taken to NY Presbyterian Allen Hospital in critical condition, according to police. There was no immediate update on his condition Wednesday.
No weapon was recovered at the scene, sources told NBC New York. There was no information on what may have happened to the officer’s car.
According to sources, the off-duty officer involved in this case had been assigned to the intelligence bureau and had served on the security detail at Gracie Mansion.
A spokesperson for the Bronx District Attorney’s Office says its public integrity bureau is investigating.
