Major League Baseball returns to New York City this week, with Queens hosting the first game as the Mets host the Pittsburgh Pirates on Thursday. Fans will have plenty of options on getting to the game, aside from driving, thanks to a new initiative from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority (MTA).
For Long Island Rail Road commuters, the new “Take the Train to the Game” promotion allows attendees of Mets home games to receive $5 off certain LIRR tickets, good for use on gameday.
The discount applies for day passes or CityTicket day passes to Mets-Willets Point purchased through the TrainTime app.
“For us, the fan experience begins long before first pitch, it starts with the trip to Citi Field,” said New York Mets Senior Vice President, Security, Guest Experience, & Ballpark Operations Keechant Sewell. “And as always, the train remains one of the most practical, cost-effective ways to get fans to Citi Field and be part of the energy that makes Mets games so memorable.”
Due to concerns regarding lack of parking over construction in the area, the MTA’s partnership with the Mets looks to expand transportation options.
For Manhattan commuters, getting to a Mets game during the week normally would cost $14.50 for a City Ticket Day Pass. With the $5 discount, that price goes down to $9.50.
On weekends, the discount increases. A City Ticket Day Pass normally costs $10.50, but with the Mets promo code, the fare goes down to $5.50.
Long Island fans can receive discounts on the commute to Citi Field as well. Mineola area fans would normally pay $24.25 for a Day Pass, which can now be $19.25. On weekends, a $20 pass can be snagged for $15 with the Mets promo.
From Hicksville, Mets fans can get a Day Pass that would normally cost $27.50 on weekdays or $22.50 on weekends for just $22.50 on weekdays or $17.50 on weekends.
How does the discount work?
When purchasing a ticket for a Mets home game, add the “Take the Train to the Game” promotion at checkout. On the day of the game, you will receive an email with a link to the TrainTime app. Follow that link and purchase a day pass or CityTicket to Mets-Willets Point as usual; the discount code will be automatically applied.
“This promotion is an example of the MTA working with private entities to earn revenue while improving the customer experience,” said MTA Director of Commercial Ventures Mary John. “Public transit is already the best way to get to Mets games, and this benefit makes it easier than ever for our customers.”
Public transportation to Citi Field
Subway: For $3, take the 7 train to Mets-Willets Point and follow the signs to Citi Field. There is an accessible exit on the Flushing-bound platform that remains open on game days. The MTA will operate additional and express trains on game days “as frequently as possible.”
Bus: Also for $3, take the Q90 bus to Seaver Way.
Ferry: The Mets will expand ferry service for fans this year. Seastreak will offer more service on game days to New Jersey, Staten Island, and Manhattan. There will also be weekend service to Stamford, CT.
Shuttle Service: A new shuttle service will operate from local shopping malls in Long Island, New Jersey, and the Bronx/Westchester area. Two buses will take fans from the malls to the Citi Field bus parking lot. Advance tickets are available for $8 per person or $22 for a family of four.
Access-A-Ride: The Access-A-Ride accessible transportation service has a designated stop at Citi Field, located at 41 Seaver Way (corner of 126th Street and 37th Avenue), south of the Bullpen Gate, in the Passenger Loading Zone (second opening), directly across from the AMWAY awning. Riders have ample shelter and an unobstructed view of 126th Street from the Bullpen Gate.
To book a ride, riders can use MyAAR, the MYmta app, or call (877)-337-2017.
