People on Long Island say they are losing sleep and patience when it comes to a constant humming noise heard throughout their communities.
Kathy Tonry has been recording the sound for months. She said she constantly hears it outside her Hauppauge home.
“It sounds like a loud humming noise, almost like an airplane hovering over your house,” Tonry said. “At night time you really hear it. At night over my TV, over my sound machine when I am in bed.”
She’s not alone in her complaints. Richard and Barbara Ferrand live a few miles away in neighboring Commack, but have the same issue: A constant sound that lasts for hours, and during all hours of the day and night.
“It’s annoying and it usually goes on about 10 or 11 o’clock at night,” said Richard Ferrand.
“Not that loud, but annoying enough,” said his wife, Barbara.
Those who have looked into it found the hum to be coming from neighboring businesses inside the Hauppauge Business Park, which is home to 1,300 companies and boasts itself as the second-largest in the nation. On Friday, the noise could be heard outside a company that residents said has been ignoring their requests to turn down the volume.
“There’s young children in these neighborhoods, you’re surrounded by these houses and whatnot. And they continue to keep the volume as loud as it always is,” said Scott Munro, a Hauppauge resident and local fire commissioner.
Munro said the noise, at times, goes 24/7.
Noise complaints are starting to pile up. More than 250 people have signed a petition online asking town of Smithtown officials to stop the noise pollution.
“These noise ordinances, they are in place. They just need to be handled,” said Munro.
A Smithtown spokesperson said the town has issued at least one noise summons in the industrial park, and that someone from the town will respond to all residents’ complaints.
“I understand they have to work and do what they’re doing for their business, but we shouldn’t have to suffer with that noise, 24/7,” said Tonry.
An association that lobbies for businesses in the area said it has no control over noise. Residents plan to take their complaints directly to town officials later in April.
