Three people were injured Saturday morning in a machete attack at New York’s Grand Central Station, according to the NYPD, before an officer shot and killed the suspect.
The man was acting erratically when he got into a verbal altercation with the victims on the 4/5/6 platform shortly before 10 a.m., law enforcement sources familiar with the attack said. He then took out a knife and attacked a 84-year-old man, a 70-year-old woman and a 65-year-old man, police said.
Police responded and engaged the suspect for approximately 10 minutes before one officer shot the man allegedly armed with the large knife, the sources added. Much of the incident was caught on cellphone cameras.
The victims were all transported to nearby hospitals and were expected to survive. The extent of their injuries was not immediately clear.
The NYPD put out a bulletin asking people to avoid the area due to the ongoing investigation.
The MTA told commuters that the 4/5/6 subway lines would skip the Grand Central-42 Street stop in both directions while the NYPD conducts their investigation.
The 5 train was running with delays in both directions. For further information visit the MTA website.
