A South Florida cheer team is making history, proving that if you can believe it, you can achieve it! Heather Walker shows us how they are shining in this 7Spotlight.
The superstarz are getting in their final practices before they perform on the biggest cheer stage in the world — next month.
Announcer: “All the way from Margate, Florida. Superstarz”
The name couldn’t be more fitting. This is the only team of special needs cheerleaders from the entire state of Florida that qualified for the competition.
Heather Walker: “How do you guys feel going into this?”
Cheer member: “Nervous, this is my first time.”
For some, it’s their first time, and like anything new, it can be scary.
Heather Walker: “Do you get nervous when you get on stage?”
Cheer member: “A little bit.”
Heather Walker: “How do you deal with that?”
Cheer member: “It’s fine, just have fun.”
For the rest of the team, they competed at worlds last year and walked away with 2nd place for their division.
This year, they tell us they are ready to take home the first-place trophy.
Cheer member: “I’m excited to go to worlds.”
Cheer member: “Me too.”
Cheer member: “I’m excited to go to worlds.”
Cheer member: “Same.”
Getting here hasn’t been easy. They practice 2-3 days a week for 2-3 hours a day.
Kristin Ramaglia, co-owner’s coach: “I think we have a really special group and supportive parents, and sometimes things seem impossible, and that doesn’t really exist here.”
Co-owner and coach Kristin Ramiglia started the group with her mom, Mari, and sister Kaite, who cheers on the team.
It began five years ago, born out of tragedy — after their brother died in a car crash.
Mari Fran Ramaglia: “Jeff’s role in our lives was to always motivate us and keep us going.”
This team was a way to honor him by giving others a place to shine.
Mari Fran Ramaglia, co-owner’s coach: “It gives them the ability to be the best they can be and really be a part of something that is going to help them grow physically, mentally, spiritually, and emotionally altogether.”
And all for free. The coaches volunteer their time, and competition costs are covered by fundraisers.
Stephanie brown, cheer coach: “Honestly, I cry every time they are on stage.”
Coach Stephanie Brown says she gets more than she gives by being a part of this team.
Stephanie brown: “It doesn’t have to be a perfect cartwheel, it doesn’t have to be a perfect anything as long as they are out there having fun and doing the best that they can. It’s just really what hits me every single time.”
Everyone here will tell you it’s more than a team—it’s …
Cheer members: “Family, sisters.”
Heather Walker: “Do you think you are going to come out number one?”
Cheer member: “Yes, of course.”
Some would say—getting this far already makes them winners, proving if you can believe it. You can achieve it.
