Authorities allege man threatened officers with knife before fatal shooting in Westminster

A 22-year-old man has died after he was shot by Westminster police during a confrontation in his home late Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The man allegedly threatened police with a knife after they entered his residence on South Ashburnham Road around 4:40 p.m. to serve an arrest warrant, according to a press release from the police department.

“During that interaction, the suspect held a large knife and moved towards the officers,” police said. “Officers discharged their department-issued firearms, striking the individual.”

After rendering medical aid at the scene, responders transported the man to a local hospital, the release noted. He was later transferred to a hospital in the Worcester area, where he was pronounced dead.

There were no physical injuries to any of the Westminster officers as a result of the incident. All officers involved have been placed on administrative leave pending an investigation into the shooting.

State Police detectives assigned to the Worcester County District Attorney’s office and Westminster police are leading the investigation.

Authorities have not released the name of the man or further details about his arrest warrant.

The district attorney’s office issued the same press release as Westminster police in response to the incident.
