The Toronto Blue Jays need to bolster their starting rotation after already dealing with multiple injuries to key pitchers.
The Blue Jays improved their rotation this offseason, signing Dylan Cease to a massive seven-year contract, but could use more depth after injuries to Shane Bieber, Bowden Francis and Yimi García. Toronto lost Chris Bassitt in free agency earlier this offseason to the Baltimore Orioles, but still could bring back 41-year-old hurler Max Scherzer.
Earlier this offseason, Scherzer told The Athletic’s Ken Rosenthal that he was willing to wait for the right situation before signing with a team, but after injuries to multiple pitchers, Ben Nicholson-Smith of Sportsnet reported that the Blue Jays are in “serious” talks to bring back Scherzer on another one-year contract.
“While nothing is finalized, the Blue Jays’ talks with Max Scherzer have gotten more serious in the last week per industry sources,” Nicholson-Smith wrote in a post to X on Friday. “Other clubs in mix but Blue Jays now appear to be his most serious pursuer on a possible one-year deal. More soon.”
Scherzer struggled during the regular season in his first year in Toronto, posting a 5.19 ERA across 17 starts but stepped it up in the postseason. The three-time Cy Young winner and eight-time All-Star may not be as dominant as he was in his prime, but he made it clear he can still make some sort of impact.
Whether an agreement can be completed remains to be seen, but bringing in a former World Series champion like Scherzer could be beneficial. A team can never have too much pitching, and with the Blue Jays already dealing with injuries, adding more depth is important.
