Boston police officer arrested, charged with manslaughter in fatal shooting

A Boston police officer has been charged with manslaughter after he allegedly shot and killed a man while responding to a reported carjacking in Roxbury last week.

Nicholas O’Malley, 33, was arrested Thursday morning and will be arraigned later in the day at the Boston Municipal Court Roxbury Division, the Suffolk County District Attorney’s Office said. He’s charged in connection with the death of Stephenson King, 39, of Dorchester.

It was not immediately clear whether O’Malley had an attorney to speak on his behalf. The Boston Police Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Boston officers responded to the reported carjacking near 1500 Tremont St. around 9:45 p.m. on March 11 and tracked down a vehicle matching the description near 10 Linwood Square, Commissioner Michael Cox previously told reporters.

According to Cox, the suspect — later identified as King — did not heed the officers’ commands and instead accelerated, hitting a police cruiser in the process. Multiple officers fired their weapons, Cox said, though it remains unclear how many did. King was rushed to a local hospital and pronounced dead.

The Suffolk DA’s office has said it is investigating. Two Boston city councilors, Miniard Culpepper and Brian Worrell, have also called for police to release body-worn camera footage of the shooting in a push for greater transparency.
