Brockton police shoot man who allegedly fired at officers, man sleeping nearby also injured, DA says

State Police detectives are investigating after Brockton police officers shot a man in the shoulder, and, during the exchange of gunfire, a 71-year-old man sleeping in a nearby home was grazed by a bullet, prosecutors said.

Two Brockton police officers driving in a cruiser “were involved in a motor vehicle pursuit” around 2:15 a.m. Sunday, Plymouth County District Attorney Tim Cruz said. The vehicle, driven by a 44-year-old man, spun out at the intersection of Moraine and Spring streets, Cruz’s office wrote.

The man exited his Lexus, the DA alleged, and “immediately began shooting at the two officers over the roof of his car.” The officers returned fire and struck the driver once in the shoulder, the DA said.

Authorities did not release the driver’s name, and the DA did not indicate that charges were filed against him.

A 71-year-old man who was sleeping in a nearby home on Moraine Streetwas grazed on the arm by a round fired during the exchange, the DA said. He called 911.

Both the Lexus driver shot in the shoulder and the 71-year-old were transported to Boston Medical Center in Brockton with non-life threatening injuries, Cruz’s office said.

The driver was then further transported to a Boston hospital for “further treatment,” the DA said.

In front of a home on Moraine Street, police found a handgun “with an obliterated serial number” allegedly recovered from the Lexus driver.

Massachusetts State Police detectives assigned to the Plymouth County DA’s office are investigating the officer-involved shooting, with assistance at the scene from MSP’s Collision Reconstruction and Analysis Section and an MSP Chemist, the DA said.
