Report: Connecticut Sun to relocate to Houston with purchase by Rockets owners

The Connecticut Sun will reportedly have a new home beginning in the 2027 season.

The Sun is being purchased by the owners of the NBA’s Houston Rockets, the Fertitta family, according to Paper City Magazine.

Connecticut will play its final year at Mohegan Sun Arena in Uncasville in the upcoming 2026 season, per the report.

The team is expected to be renamed the Houston Comets, the city’s former team that was disbanded in 2008.

The franchise’s sale, which is reportedly for a WNBA-record $300 million according to ESPN’s Alexa Philippou, comes on the heels of the league’s new collective bargaining agreement.

Last summer, former Celtics minority owner Steve Pagliuca reportedly had a $325 million agreement in place to purchase the Sun from the Mohegan Tribe and relocate the team to Boston. Pagliuca also planned to build a practice facility for the Sun in Brighton, which would have cost him an extra $100 million.

Pagliuca stated last year that the deal was not made official.

Before the deal could go through, the WNBA reportedly barred it from happening. The league even considered purchasing the organization itself to choose what to do with it, which happened to the Comets before it ceased. The league likely would have moved the Sun out of New England.

Once the WNBA got involved in the potential sale, movement on a resolution seemed to come to a halt.

Over seven months later, it appears Connecticut’s time as home to a professional basketball team is coming to an end.

The Sun have called the Constitution State home since 2003.

Their last regular season opener is scheduled for May 10 when they host the Seattle Storm.
