CORAL SPRINGS, FLA. (WSVN) – Officials from Coral Springs and several members across the community are mourning their vice mayor after she was found dead following an alleged domestic violence incident.
For those who sat next to Coral Springs Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer Bowen at City Hall and those who called her a friend, a void grows in their hearts after learning of her tragic death.
“Nancy, we will carry you by our side in everything we do,” said Coral Springs Mayor Scott Brooks in a recorded message posted on social media.
Metayer Bowen’s colleagues and loved ones described her as a beacon of light.
“Vice Mayor Nancy Metayer was my right hand. She was more than a colleague — she was a dear friend, a leader, and a true light in our city,” said Brooks.
Metayer Bowen’s light was dimmed on Wednesday, when investigators found her body inside the master bedroom on the second floor of her home.
It began when her colleagues at City Hall noticed she hadn’t shown up for several scheduled morning meetings. Concerned for her well-being, they called 911 to request a welfare check at her home.
The officers who arrived at the vice mayor’s home said her body was “rolled up in a comforter with a garbage bag around her feet,” according to the police report.
In what detectives have described as a domestic violence incident, authorities tracked down Metayer Bowen’s husband, Stephen Bowen, to an apartment community in Plantation, where he was reportedly staying with a friend.
The arrest report says Bowen told a family member that “he shot her three times with a shotgun the previous night and then slept downstairs.”
When asked why he did it, “Bowen said that he couldn’t take it anymore.”
On Thursday, tributes for Metayer Bowen poured in from friends and strangers alike, honoring her service to the community.
Before their game against the Boston Bruins in Sunrise, the Florida Panthers observed a moment of silence to honor Metayer Bowen.
Back at Coral Springs City Hall, the flag flew at half-staff, with a growing collection of flowers nearby.
Inside the chamber, her seat was draped in black.
“We’re going to miss you dearly, Nancy, and we will continue to honor you and your memory,” said Brooks.
Community leaders are planning to hold a vigil to celebrate Metayer Bowen’s life and mourn her loss on Friday at 7 p.m.
