The People’s Union USA is calling for a boycott of four major American companies ahead of the holiday season.
Why It Matters
Boycotts are a form of protest that involves putting financial pressure on organizations. They have contributed to progressive social change throughout history.
December is the most crucial sales period for multiple industries, and American retailers are already set for a not-so-merry Christmas, as broad-based financial strains are dampening the festive spirit, and tariffs make it tougher for businesses to court the cash-strapped consumer.
These boycotts are coming at a critical time for companies, and industry forecasts have projected that the holiday season may already be muted at best. Shoppers plan to spend 5.3 percent less this year, comparable to the 7.6 percent drop seen in 2020, according to a consumer survey from PricewaterhouseCoopers.
What To Know
The People’s Union USA is calling for a boycott of the following companies:
- Amazon
- Home Depot
- Target
- Walmart
A post on The People’s Union USA website lists these companies, and then states, “December is also the month where consumerism reaches its peak. ‘Holiday spirit’ has been weaponized into pressure, guilt, and overspending. Families go into debt to fulfill expectations created by companies that do not care about their lives, their wages, or their future. This year, we break that cycle.”
Since the onset of the second Trump administration, calls for boycotts of multiple big name American companies have become from groups like the People’s Union USA common online, as activist groups have called for promoting corporate accountability, restoring diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) programs, and reshaping corporate influence over U.S. economic policies.
The impact of said boycotts is debatable. There have been reports of some companies experiencing a drop in foot traffic in stores, but whether there has been a tangible, negative impact on companies being boycotted is unclear.
Newsweek has contacted the companies listed for comment.
What People Are Saying
The People’s Union USA, in an announcement of the boycotts on their website: “December has become the most profitable month of the year for the corporations that drain our economy, raise prices without cause, and funnel their record profits into political influence instead of community wellbeing. These companies survive because the people keep feeding them. So this month, we stop feeding them. The December Blackouts are a unified stand against the corporations that have manipulated the cost of living, driven inflation, and treated the American people as a revenue stream instead of human beings.”
What’s Next
The boycott will run for the month of December.
