A worker expecting a company-sponsored crawfish boil says the event instead turned into a source of frustration after management announced shortages and urged employees to clean the workplace ahead of customer tours.
Original poster (OP) Prudent_Case5006 wrote on Reddit that employees had been “hyping” the annual event for months, only for flyers to disappear days before it was scheduled.
A message from management, shared in a screenshot, said the company had already received 350 RSVPs, but was, “short on crawfish,” adding that manufacturing staff would not be able to attend.
The message also emphasized the event as a “Customer Appreciation” effort and instructed workers to prepare the shop floor for tours, including polishing the space, “like the top of the Chrysler building.”
‘This isn’t it’
The post drew reactions from other Redditors, some of whom questioned the tone of the directive amid 300 comments.
“Wait… are they actually quoting Miss Hannigan from Annie,” one asked.
A critic pointed out that, “People deserve respect. This isn’t it.”
A fellow pundit quipped: “Bet the people who shine the Chrysler building get crawfish.”
The situation reflects concerns about workplace conduct and communication.
Guidance from CoAdvantage states that, “Fostering civility in the workplace is not just about politeness–it is a strategic business imperative,” according to Johnny Taylor Jr., president and CEO of the Society for Human Resource Management.
In the Reddit post, the employee compared the situation to a prior company event, saying workers had to RSVP a month in advance for a pizza party, adding to their skepticism about how the crawfish boil was handled.
The OP questioned whether their reaction was justified, writing that the workplace, “is a joke.”
Turnover Risk
Workplace experts note that unclear expectations or inconsistent treatment can contribute to dissatisfaction.
The CoAdvantage guide warns that unaddressed issues can “damage productivity” and increase turnover risk, reinforcing how communication around events or benefits can affect morale.
Mental health professionals say workplace dissatisfaction can stem from a range of factors beyond pay or workload.
“Feeling stuck in a job without room to grow can leave us feeling stagnant and questioning our purpose, which can negatively impact our well-being,” Kristin Papa, LCSW, said, in an interview with Verywell Mind.
While the Reddit thread focused on a single workplace event, responses suggest that employees often view such moments as indicators of broader workplace respect.
Comments in the thread centered less on the crawfish itself and more on how the situation was communicated and perceived.
The OP did not indicate whether management responded to employee concerns, or clarified the event plans.
The company referenced in the post was not named and no further details about the event outcome were provided.
