BOSTON (WHDH) – Spring has officially sprung and baseball will be back in Boston Friday – and fans coming to Fenway Park for opening day have plenty to be excited about.
Fans will be flocking to Fenway Park Friday afternoon when newcomer Sonny Gray will take the mound and kick things off at home for the Sox against the San Diego Padres. The 14-year MLB veteran is looking for redemption after a lackluster Red Sox debut Saturday.
Team staff members said fans will have a lot to look forward to at the ballpark:
“The real nature of coming here and just being with people and connecting in that whole community,” said Red Sox Chief Experience Officer Sarah McKenna. “Just the sun getting warmer and the leaves coming on the trees it’s just a really fun place to be.”
On Friday, members of the 1986 Red Sox team will take the field in honor of the 40th anniversary of their World Series appearance. MLB Hall of Famer Wade Boggs, Roger Clemens, and Jim Rice were some of the stars on that team; many will be coming back just as they did a decade ago.
The first pitch is set to be thrown at 2:10 p.m.; gates open around noon. The Red Sox recommend fans be in their seats by 1:30 p.m. to catch pre-game festivities.
