Fire destroys Newbury home, kills pets as family escapes

Four residents escaped without injury after an early-morning fire engulfed their home, authorities say.

A fast-moving fire destroyed a home in Newbury early Friday morning, killing two pets but leaving the four residents inside unharmed, officials said.

Shortly before 1 a.m., the Newbury Fire Department responded to a report of a house fire at 49 Fruit St., according to a department statement.

When firefighters arrived, the home was already heavily engulfed in flames, prompting officials to strike a second alarm to bring additional crews to the scene, the fire department said.

All four residents were inside the home at the time of the fire but were able to escape safely. No injuries were reported among residents or first responders, fire officials said.

However, a dog and cat that were inside the home were unable to escape and were killed in the blaze, according to the fire department.

The fire completely destroyed the home. The displaced residents have since secured temporary lodging, the department said.

The blaze also spread to several vehicles and gas grills on the property, authorities said.

Mutual aid was provided by fire departments from Newburyport, Salisbury, Amesbury, West Newbury, Georgetown, Boxford, and Rowley.

Newbury police and the Massachusetts State Police Fire and Explosion Investigation Unit are assisting with the investigation into the fire’s origin and cause, according to the Newbury Fire Department.
