The Los Angeles Dodgers and Marvel supervillain Thanos frankly do share a lot of common ground.
As back-to-back World Series champions, the Dodgers have the dominance to claim villainhood, and they’ve spent the last few seasons racking up superstars much in the same manner that Thanos chased down Infinity Stones. There’s a sense of dread from baseball fans that there’s almost no way to prevent this team from continuing to rack up rings.
So naturally, a few bad offensive performances to start the season isn’t worrying the Dodgers. And first baseman Freddie Freeman invoked one of Thanos’ most iconic lines from the movie “Avengers: Endgame” after Wednesday’s loss to the Cleveland Guardians.
Freeman’s Marvel reference perfectly sums up Dodgers’ cold start
“Our offense is inevitable,” said Freeman, per Mirjam Swanson of the Los Angeles Times. “Hopefully, maybe tomorrow, with an off-day, the coldness will go away and we’ll heat up.”
It’s not as though the Dodgers are at the bottom of the barrel as a team so far, as they rank 15th in the majors in OPS and ninth in home runs through their first six games. Freeman, who has a spot in the Hall of Fame waiting for him in a few short years, is just 5-for-24 (.208 batting average) with one homer.
When Shohei Ohtani, Mookie Betts, and Kyle Tucker are all batting below .200, it’s a pretty clear sign that things are about to take a turn for the better. And it’s not as if LA’s 4-2 start is a problem — but soon enough, the offense is going to have to start carrying the freight to keep this team atop the National League West standings.
No one seems worried, Freeman in particular, and nor should they be.
