A golden retriever owner has sparked laughter and sympathy online after sharing an unexpected outcome from multiple expensive vet visits.
In a viral Reddit post shared on Tuesday under the username u/More_Secretary_1819, the owner revealed that concerns about their dog’s low energy levels led to a surprising—and humorous—diagnosis.
In the post, the owner said that they had spent more than $2,000 on veterinary appointments after worrying something might be wrong with their 3-year-old golden retriever. The concern stemmed from expectations around the breed’s energy levels, which did not seem to match their dog’s behavior.
“Spent well over $2,000 in various vet visits because I was always told golden retrievers are very active and love being outside,” the Reddit user wrote.
The poster added that, while their dog does enjoy being outdoors, her enthusiasm is short-lived. “Well this sweet girl (3 years old) is quite the opposite, she loves being outside but will only run around for 2 minutes before she’s done and ready to leave.”
The owner added that, once those few minutes are over, the dog is perfectly content to relax for the rest of the day. “She will gladly nap all day. and most exercise we have to force her to do,” the post continued.
The behavior was worrying enough that the owner sought professional opinions, fearing an underlying medical issue.
After multiple visits and consultations, however, the conclusion from two separate veterinarians was unexpected. “I was so worried and thinking something was wrong just to be told by two vets she’s just lazy,” the owner wrote.
Alongside the caption, where photos of the golden retriever sitting down at the beach, her tongue hanging out, appearing calm and unfazed, instead of running around in the sand.
The post quickly resonated with users, many of whom found humor in the situation and related to the experience of overthinking their pet’s habits. It has so far received over 1,000 upvotes and 113 comments on the platform.
One user, Silver_Daikon6974, commented: “Vet should have told you this without the mortgage payment…beautiful pup.”
Putrid_Appearance509 added: “I’ve owned and fostered dozens of goldens, I’ve met two golden ‘marshmallows’ who truly gotta go back to bed at all times. They had in common that they were incredibly easy going, and were super people motivated. No people to meet, no exercise happening.”
