A ground stop has been issued at O’Hare International Airport as thunderstorms roll in along with warmer temperatures in the Chicago area Friday morning.
Inclement weather and thunderstorms caused the ground stop, according to the FAA.
Periods of thunderstorms are expected throughout the day, according to the National Weather Service, which said the hazardous weather outlook is for portions of north central Illinois, northeast Illinois and northwest Indiana.
As of about 9 a.m., fog and mist are reported in the area and the temperature is 52 degrees, which is expected to spike near O’Hare to about 70, according to a NWS meterologist. Closer to the lake, it will be in the 60s.
Heavy rain and localized flooding will be possible with any of these thunderstorms, some of which may become severe this afternoon and late Friday, according to the NWS. Large hail and locally damaging winds will be possible with the strongest storms.
There is also a risk for tornadoes with any thunderstorms that develop this afternoon and dense fog will slowly improve from south to north this morning, according to the NWS.
This is a developing story. Check back for updates.
