Healey congratulates WHOOP on plans to expand, add 600 jobs

The wearable fitness tech company says it will base most of the new positions at its Kenmore Square headquarters.

WHOOP is ramping up its Boston presence, announcing Wednesday that it will add 600 new jobs — most of them at its Kenmore Square headquarters.

In a congratulatory response to the company’s expansion, Gov. Maura Healey said in a statement that the decision “is a powerful vote of confidence in our economy.”

“Companies choose Massachusetts because of our incredible talent, world-class research institutions, and strong partnerships that help innovative businesses grow,” Healey continued. “We’re proud WHOOP continues to grow here.”

Will Ahmed founded WHOOP at the Harvard Innovation Labs in Cambridge in 2012. The company opened its more than 100,000-square-foot Kenmore Square headquarters in 2023.

WHOOP, which sells memberships beginning at $150 a year that help wearable users track key health indicators, says it now has millions of members worldwide. Backed by more than $400 million in venture capital, the company ships to 56 countries and operates in six languages.

In a statement on Wednesday, Ahmed, the CEO of WHOOP, said the expansion will help the company scale globally.

“Right now, companies are debating whether to hire more people or just invest in AI,” said Ahmed, in a statement. “We are doing both. We are doubling down on exceptional talent and doubling down on world-class AI tools because the combination is what wins.”

Ahmed said that health monitoring remains one of the most important platforms in the world, one that he said: “WHOOP intends to own.”

WHOOP will open 600 roles throughout the year, spanning technical, scientific, creative, and commercial functions. Other than Boston, roles will also open across North America, Europe, the Gulf Cooperation Council, and Asia.
