The United States Department of Homeland Security reports that approximately 125,000 people applied for refugee status in 2023. That process requires multiple qualifications, and the average wait times can be anywhere between a few months, to several years. For many people fleeing life-threatening situations in their residing country, they feel they have to make a choice. Do they go through the legal process of entering another country, or do they break the law, illegally enter, and seek immediate asylum?
