Man arrested after victim finds stolen skis listed on Facebook Marketplace

Officials are urging members of the public to use “Safe Exchange Zones” inside BPD stations.

A Dorchester man was arrested Thursday after allegedly trying to sell stolen skis on Facebook Marketplace. He was apprehended after the victim thought to check Facebook and found his skis listed there, police said.

Tyrone Snead, 43, is facing one charge of receiving stolen property worth more than $1,200. He is expected to be arraigned in South Boston District Court.

The victim had already filed a theft report with the Boston Police Department and contacted police about the online listing. He contacted BPD again just before 6 p.m. Thursday to give updated information., according to a press release.

BPD officers arranged to meet with Snead near the intersection of Massachusetts Avenue and Washington Street in the South End. They were later told to meet in the lobby of 155 Northampton St., police said.

At that location, officers saw the skis propped up against a fence. They confirmed with Snead that the asking price of the skis matched the Facebook listing, identified themselves as BPD officers, and then placed Snead under arrest, according to officials. The skis were returned to the victim.

Snead also had an active warrant out for his arrest from Roxbury District Court on a drug possession charge.

In light of the incident, officials are reminding the public that “Safe Exchange Zones” exist inside BPD stations throughout the city.

These were established as a response to the increase in popularity of platforms like Facebook Marketplace, where buyers often arrange to meet strangers in person to exchange goods. The “Safe Exchange Zones” are available 24 hours a day and monitored by security video. If members of the public are arranging to meet someone for a sale, they can utilize these spaces. A list of BPD station locations with these safe zones can be found on the department’s website.
