Man found dead in Brockton was in fight, then run over, DA says

Lianes Brandao worked as a forklift driver and enjoyed playing soccer and spending time with friends, according to his obituary.

A 28-year-old Brockton man died early Sunday after a fight and a subsequent hit-and-run, authorities say.

Shortly before 4 a.m., Brockton police, while on a routine patrol, discovered the man lying on the ground in the parking lot behind Cardoso Cafe, near a gas station at Lincoln Street and West Railroad Avenue, according to a statement from the Plymouth County District Attorney’s Office.

Emergency crews transported him to a local hospital before he was later airlifted to a Boston hospital, where he was pronounced dead, authorities said.

The victim was identified as Lianes Brandao, of Brockton.

Investigators say witness testimony and surveillance video indicate Brandao was involved in a physical altercation with several individuals, who then left the scene.

“Some time after,” Brandao was run over by a vehicle that also fled, authorities said.

Officials identified the vehicle as a gray 2013 Jeep Compass. The operator was later located and interviewed at the Brockton Police Department, the district attorney’s office said.

Massachusetts State Police and Brockton police are investigating the incident. Anyone with information is urged to call the Plymouth County State Police Detective Unit at 508-894-2584.

In an interview with The Enterprise, Brandao’s aunt, Ericka Dos Reis, described her nephew as quiet and shy and as someone who loved to spend time with his family.

“He’s very lovable,” said Dos Reis. “Me and him were close. He used to call me a lot. It’s difficult knowing that call won’t come in anymore.”

Brandao worked as a forklift driver and enjoyed playing soccer and spending time with friends, according to his obituary, which described him as a “proud son, devoted brother, and loyal friend.”

“His humor and lighthearted personality brought smiles to many and left lasting memories for all who knew him,” the obituary reads.

After living in Cape Verde for a decade, Brandao came to the United States, where he learned English and attended night school, his aunt said.

Along with his warehouse work, Brandao was helping care for his elderly grandmother, Dos Reis said.

“[His grandmother] is taking it very hard,” she said. “We’re all in disbelief.”
