Musician Megan Thee Stallion was forced to cut a recent show short when she was rushed to the hospital mid-performance.
Megan, born Megan Pete, was performing in Broadway’s Moulin Rouge! The Musical in New York City on Tuesday when the incident occurred. She is playing the character Zidler in the iconic show, which has won 10 Tony Awards for Best Musical.
Just minutes after the opening scenes of the musical, Megan reportedly began feeling unwell, and the show was stopped suddenly. It later emerged that the performer had been taken to the hospital.
Reports from show-goers indicate that the musical was temporarily stopped, before an actor stepped in to replace her in the role and the show went on. Newsweek has contacted Moulin Rouge! The Musical and representatives for Megan Thee Stallion for comment on this story.
Representatives for Megan confirmed that the star had been hospitalized, saying in a statement to the Daily Mail: “During Tuesday night’s production, Megan started feeling very ill and was promptly transported to a local hospital, where her symptoms are currently being evaluated.”
They added that they would “share additional updates as more information becomes available.”
The “WAP” singer’s hairstylist also confirmed Megan had been hospitalized, asking for “prayers” for the musician in a post to his X account, @KellonDeryck, where he wrote: “Everyone say a prayer for Megan, we are all at the hospital.”
Journalist Loren LoRosa of The Breakfast Club wrote on her X account @LorenLorosa that she had been at the production, and for “the few opening scenes I saw [Megan] in she was great on stage.”
But shortly after, they “stopped Moulin Rouge mid show, apologized to the audience and said ‘stay inside and seated.'”
In a follow-up post, she said the show then “removed Meg the Stallion for the night” and had replaced her with another actor, but at that time there was “no explanation as to why.”
Three-time Grammy-winning musician Megan was announced in February as making her Broadway debut starting from March 24 until May 17.
She had previously appeared in two movie musicals, including Mean Girls, and made appearances in TV shows including animated series Big Mouth and Marvel’s She-Hulk.
Megan said in a statement at the time, via New York Theatre Guide, that starring in the Broadway production was “an absolute honor.”
“I’ve always believed in pushing myself creatively and theater is definitely a new opportunity that I’m excited to embrace. Broadway demands a different level of discipline, preparation and storytelling, but I’m up for the challenge and can’t wait for the Hotties to see a new side of me.”
