A miniature dachshund has left social-media viewers in tears after a simple habit revealed just how strong his attachments run.
In a clip posted by Elsa (@el.sa.e) on TikTok, her dog Otto can be seen gently tapping at the door of her sister’s room with his paw.
Newsweek reached out to @el.sa.e via direct message on TikTok.
The repeated knocking has worn away the paint in one small spot on the door—evidence of how often he returns to the same place. When the door doesn’t open, Otto pauses and lets out what sounds like a tiny, resigned sigh.
Text over the video reads: “My dog has tapped on my sister’s door so many times he’s worn the paint away.” Elsa captioned the post: “Wait for the groan.”
The clip has gone viral on TikTok, clocking up over 218,000 views, with users moved to tears in the comments.
“This is the sort of thing that makes a house a home,” one user wrote, while another posted, “Never paint over this!!!” Others compared the worn patch to childhood height markings on a wall.
Several commenters shared similar experiences. “Same and she usually scratches over the exact same part so there’s deep dents in the wood,” one person said.
“My uncle’s cat (when visiting) always wanted to come wake me up—scratching and meowing behind the door,” posted another.
“Now that my baby girl is gone I’ve got this to remember her,” a third shared.
One summed it up simply: “The BEST art ever!!!!”
For many, Otto’s behavior felt especially fitting for his breed. Dachshunds are known for their strong bonds, persistence and tendency to fixate on the people they love most. Originally bred to hunt badgers, the small dogs are famously determined—and often emotionally expressive.
Many owners also describe them as deeply people‑focused, prone to forming strong attachments to specific family members and routines.
That determination, combined with their expressive nature, often means dachshunds communicate their wants quietly but insistently, whether through gentle paw taps, lingering stares or, as in Otto’s case, patient knocking that leaves a mark over time.
“Never paint, this is a precious memory!” one comment read.
That combination seems to shine through in Otto’s quiet knocking. “This is the cutest thing I’ve seen all day,” one viewer commented. “It’s like he’s trying to break in.” Another added: “Knocking so politely I can’t.”
