“It’s hard to imagine a better start to the season.”
Mother Nature is smiling on New England ski resorts this season.
Early snowfall meant early openings for several resorts, and some are even breaking records.
“It’s hard to imagine a better start to the season,” said Brian Norton, president and general manager of Loon Mountain Resort in Lincoln, N.H., in a statement.
Consistent temperatures and more than two feet of natural snow since Loon’s opening day on Nov. 21 have enabled officials to open trails quickly, according to Norton, so the White Mountains resort has opened more than 60% of its trails so far.
“Looking back at our records to the early 2000s, we’ve never had this much terrain open this early in the season,” Norton noted.
Three Vermont ski resorts just landed on a list of ski resorts with the most snow in the U.S. this season: Jay Peak Resort in Jay, Stowe Mountain Resort in Stowe, and Smugglers’ Notch in Jeffersonville.
Jay Peak Resort called last month “a November to Remember” after receiving the most snow they’ve ever had during the month, causing the resort to open early this year.
The resort’s 123 inches since November 1 broke a 70-year record, Steve Wright, president and general manager, told The Newport Daily Express earlier this month.
Jay Peak has seen a total of 177 inches, or just under 15 feet, so far this season.
Tim Kelley, the weatherman for Jay Peak, wrote in a recent report on the website, “Most winters we don’t get past 12 feet of snow until the calendar changes to a new year.”
Jay Peak is now approaching 200 inches of snow.
“The last time Jay crossed that mark before the New Year was December 27, 2003,” wrote officials on Jay’s website.
Jay Peak was named the best ski resort in Vermont by Boston.com readers earlier this year.
Stowe Mountain has seen 97 inches of snow so far this season, officials reported on Friday. Mount Mansfield recently set a record for earliest 50-inch snow depth.
“The Stoweglobe has been shaken and the powder portal has opened,” wrote officials. “We’re in deep here on the top of Vermont, as we celebrate record snow depths and out of this world conditions on the mountain.”
Stowe was recently named one of the best ski resorts in the U.S. by Conde Nast Traveler readers and among the best destinations for snow in the U.S. by USA Today readers.
Smugglers’ Notch officials celebrated online Thursday after hitting a triple-digit snowfall amount, for a total of 101 inches so far this season.
“We cracked triple digit snowfall this morning!” wrote officials, adding, “We’re hoping the next 100 inches come just as quickly as the first.”
Smuggs was recently named the most family-friendly ski resort in the East by Ski magazine.
