NH suspect who allegedly shot at family members killed in officer-involved shooting

A wanted New Hampshire man was killed Saturday night in a shootout with police when they tried to take him into custody, according to prosecutors.

Matthew Masse, 38, of Raymond, New Hampshire, was fatally shot by police, New Hampshire Attorney General John Formella said in a press release. Earlier that day, Masse shot and wounded an officer with the Nottingham Police Department, according to officials.

New Hampshire State Police began a search after local law enforcement responded to reports at about 1:30 p.m. that Masse fired a long gun at his family members. When officers attempted to apprehend him on Ham Road in Raymond, he allegedly shot at them and wounded a Nottingham officer, state police said in a press release.

Masse then fled the scene into the woods, prompting law enforcement to set up a perimeter “in an effort to contain” him, police said. The wounded officer was taken to a local hospital and treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

State police asked residents of Ham Road and Nottingham Road to shelter in place, and all others were asked to avoid the area. At around 10 p.m., officers found Masse in the woods where he had been hiding.

An “exchange of gunfire” ensued between Masse and the officers, during which he was killed, according to prosecutors. An autopsy is being conducted this week to determine his exact cause and manner of death.

No other officers or citizens were injured, and the shelter-in-place was lifted, Formella said. The names of the officers involved in the shootout with Masse are being withheld until they have been formally interviewed.

Investigators are also in contact with all agencies and officers who responded to collect body and cruiser camera footage, prosecutors said. At this time, the exact circumstances are still under active investigation.
