Patrick Henry High head coaches recently offered an update on how their teams are doing for the spring season.
With the spring sports season in full bloom, Patrick Henry High varsity teams are in the heat of competition.
The Mission Times Courier recently caught up with the respective head coaches for an update on their teams. All of the information was provided by each team’s head coach.
Boys’ and girls’ swimming and dive
Head Coach Troy Smith – The girls’ team finished last season fourth in the City Championships, eighth in the CIF Championships. Key members are Eva Cruz, senior (potential CIF finalist); Ashlyn McNees, sophomore (CIF automatic qualifier); Molly Vu, senior; Aubrey Chanthavong, freshman (likely CIF finalist); Maya Chennamchetty, sophomore diver (25th place at state championships last year as a freshman) and Zoe (Coco) Rainey, senior diver (likely CIF finalist and potential state champs qualifier)
Team goals: Finish in top three at City Championships and top five at CIF Championships.
Boys’ team finished 10th last season at City Championships and 18th at CIF Championships. Key members are Hue Devine, senior (CIF qualifier) and Eddie Smith, sophomore (potential CIF finalist).
Team goals: Finish in top eight at City Championships and top 12 at CIF championships.
Softball
Head Coach Amanda Allen – Finished last season 10-15. Key members are rreshman pitcher Teagan Forbes; sophomore catcher Stephanie La; junior shortstop Angelina Mazon; sophomore second baseman Jiana Millari and junior corner Whitney Swain.
Team goals: Play as a team and compete for the Division II championship.
Boys’ Volleyball
Head Coach David Chau – Went 21-8 last season, lost in the first round of CIF’s. Key members are all seniors – co-captains Sylas Doan and Jack Boyd, Finnley Corbin and Connor Carr.
Team goals: Advance past the first round of the playoffs and win the league title. Also, have a short memory when mistakes are made, and always prioritize the team.
Girls’ Lacrosse
Head Coach Kenny Hasselbar – Finished 13-7 last season, lost in the Division II semifinals in overtime. Key members are juniors Kayla Sweatt and Olivia Harrison, senior Allison Kesling, and freshmen Tayte Miller and Zoey Howard.
Team goals: Blend a big mix of youth into the varsity program after graduating 12 seniors last year and having four freshmen on the varsity roster getting quality minutes. Also want to be playing best at the end of the season and build a team-first mentality that reminds the girls of the bigger task at hand, which is to give everything for their teammates around them.
Boys’ Lacrosse
Head Coach Blake Crossman – Finished 2-8 during the 2025 season. Key members are junior Mac Schott, sophomore Jack Michner and seniors Jake Heimann, Stone Timmons, Aiden Ramsey and Jaxon Hayes.
Team goals: Make it to the Division II CIF Championship.
Boys’ Tennis
Head Coach Jason Kaplan – Finished 16-5 overall a season ago, runner-up in the Division I championship. Beat Steele Canyon, Cathedral and The Bishop’s School before losing 10-8 to La Jolla in the title match. Key members) are seniors Reece Chateau, Angus Boettcher, Gabe Smith, sophomore Raja Smith and freshman Rafa Truong.
Team goals: Hoping to win the Eastern League crown, and then get back to the final of the Division I CIF Team Playoffs, finishing the season with the title.
Girls’ Beach Volleyball
Head Coach Jim Tuyay – Ended up in third last season in the Eastern League and advanced to the Division II CIF semifinals. Key members are seniors Alyssa Chu and Ellie Scribner. The team also has a good crop of freshmen.
Team goals: Win the Eastern League and CIFs. Also to be playing the game of beach volleyball after their high school playing days.
Boys’ Golf
Head Coach Gary McMinn – The team finished the past three years in the Top 10 at CIF’s and Top 4 in Division I play. All six members at CIF’s last year had over 4.0 GPAs. Key members are seniors Huy Le, Tyler Graves and Trenton Gentile; juniors Aiden Lincoln, Jordan Mallari and Joaquin Cuevas and freshmen Koen Chu, Lucas Topacio.
Team goals: Finish mid-pack in the challenging Western League, make it to the CIF Tournament.
