For the first time in a decade, the Kansas City Chiefs failed to make the NFL playoffs. While Patrick Mahomes remains focused on his recovery from the torn ACL he suffered late in the season, his teammate Travis Kelce has been spending time on the golf course — including teeing it up with world No. 1 golfer Scottie Scheffler.
On Wednesday, Kelce took part in the Waste Management Phoenix Open Pro-Am, playing the front nine with Scheffler and the back nine with Brooks Koepka.
Clips from the event circulated throughout the day, but one moment in particular went viral when Kelce stepped up on the iconic par-3 16th hole and stuck his tee shot just feet from the pin. The shot led to a birdie and sparked a celebration in front of hundreds of fans packed around the hole.
“TRAVIS KELCE WITH AN ABSOLUTE DART ON THE 16TH,” Golf Channel posted. “The 3x Super Bowl champ sticks it to within a few feet and wins the gold WM chain!”

Reacting to the shot Wednesday was Mahomes, who took to social media and posted, “Let’s go!!!!! @tkelce.” The post was quickly interpreted by some fans as a comment on Kelce’s NFL future — which remains undecided as he continues to consider retirement.
That reaction prompted Mahomes to follow up with another post, clarifying his intent by writing, “Talking about [golf],” accompanied by laughing emojis.
“For a minute there, I thought he was coming back for a final season,” one fan said.
Another added, “He’s still coming back though, right???? Right??????!!!! We need you two back together next season.”
A third fan wrote, “Ah, I was very confused. Thanks for clarifying.”
“You’re playing with us,” another fan shared.
One more fan commented, “I automatically knew what he was talking about, but I was hoping I didn’t know.”
Mahomes and Kelce have cemented their legacies as one of the greatest duos in NFL history during their time in Kansas City. Together, they’ve won three Super Bowls and reached five.
Now, with Kelce 13 years into his career and set to enter unrestricted free agency, he’ll soon have to decide whether he wants to return for another season — but for now, he’s enjoying himself at one of the PGA Tour’s most popular stops.
