New England Patriots
The Super Bowl runner-ups will return to action in a few weeks.
The NFL announced voluntary offseason workout dates for all 32 teams on Friday.
The offseason program is designed for teaching, training, and physical conditioning. It is divided into three phases.
The Patriots are set to begin phase one on April 20th. During the first two weeks, the team will be limited to conditioning drills, meetings, and rehab work. It’s an opportunity for the team to gather and work on those things before they start on-field drills.
During the next three weeks, they’ll go through phase two, which allows on-field drills. Players can line up against each other, but full contact is not allowed and the pace has to be at a walkthrough level.
After the initial phase comes Organized Team Activities (OTAs). That’s when the team can do drills on the field beyond just conditioning. It’s still a non-contact period, but players can line up against each other and go through walkthroughs.
Phase three is organized team activities, during which non-contact team drills on the field are allowed. The dates for the Patriots’ OTA sessions are: May 27, May 29, June 1-2, June 4, June 8-9, and June 11.
After OTAs, there will be a mandatory three-day minicamp from June 15-17. This is the conclusion of the voluntary offseason program. Players will return to Foxborough for training camp in July.
Training camp involves contact and a ramp-up to padded practices ahead of the preseason. Training camp and the preseason prepare teams for the regular-season, which begins in early September.
