Patriots reportedly set to release QB Joshua Dobbs

Dobbs signed with New England in 2025, and was Drake Maye’s backup last season.

Patriots reportedly set to release QB Joshua Dobbs: The Patriots roster continues to undergo changes during the offseason, with the latest move coming at the quarterback position.

Joshua Dobbs, who was Drake Maye’s backup in 2025, is set to be released by the Patriots, according to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport.

Dobbs, 31, signed a two-year deal to be the second quarterback on the depth chart in 2025. He appeared in four games last season, completing seven out of 10 passes for 65 yards.

New England’s recent decision to bring back fellow quarterback Tommy DeVito on a two-year deal that includes guaranteed money may have played a role in the decision to move on from Dobbs, per Rapoport.

The Patriots were the ninth NFL team that Dobbs signed a contract with given his continued role throughout his professional career as a backup. Should New England go through with the move, Dobbs will once again become a free agent.

Trivia: Joshua Dobbs was selected by the Steelers in the 2017 NFL Draft. It included a few other notable QBs (including Patrick Mahomes), but can you remember the first quarterback to be picked in that draft?

The Celtics lost to the Timberwolves 102-92 on Sunday. Boston returns home to face the Thunder at TD Garden on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.

The Bruins host the Maple Leafs on Tuesday at 7 p.m.
