Patriots sign offensive tackle James Hudson

Hudson has played in 60 career games including 19 starts, 14 of which came at right tackle.

The Patriots have signed offensive tackle James Hudson, according to a news release from the team.

Hudson, who is entering his sixth NFL season, was released by the Giants earlier this month. The 6-foot-5, 313-pound lineman has played in 60 games with 19 career starts, 14 of which came at right tackle. The other five were at left tackle.

The move adds depth at the tackle spot for the Patriots.

Starters Will Campbell and Morgan Moses are under contract. Vederian Lowe, who filled in for Campbell at left tackle while the rookie was dealing with an MCL sprain, signed with the 49ers. Thayer Munford, another reserve tackle, recently became a free-agent.

Seventh-round pick Marcus Bryant played in 12 games, but did not make any starts during his rookie season. Caedan Wallace, whom the Patriots drafted as a tackle, switched to guard last offseason. Lorenz Metz and Sebastien Gutierrez are also on the roster, but have spent the bulk of their time with the practice squad.

Most of Hudson’s experience is at right tackle. He’ll likely back up Moses who started all 17 games last season. Moses turned 35 in March.

Hudson made a pair of starts for the Giants at left tackle last season, so if the Patriots find themselves in another pinch without Campbell they could potentially play Hudson there too. He’s one of the more experienced options the Patriots have at tackle for the moment.

Hudson was a fourth-round pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. He spent the first four years of his career with the Browns before moving onto the Giants last season. He briefly overlapped with Mike Vrabel, who was a consultant for the Browns in 2024.

Now, he’ll head to New England with a chance to compete for a roster spot as the Patriots continue to keep an eye on their offensive line.
