The Pittsburgh Pirates opened up their home slate of games with a 5-4 win over the Baltimore Orioles on Friday afternoon. However, the most exciting part of the day for the fanbase was top prospect Konnor Griffin making his major league debut.
Griffin picked up his first career hit and RBI as the Pirates held off the Orioles and also generated a lot of excitement for what could be a much better season in Pittsburgh after the Pirates made some very impactful offseason moves.
There is a lot to be excited about in Pittsburgh, especially with Griffin now in the majors. After the game, Griffin shared a message about his big day and what it meant to him.
“It was awesome,” Griffin told Harold Reynolds of MLB Network. “Just everything I’ve dreamed of for a long time. Getting it under my belt, first big-league game. We got a win as well. It was a perfect day.”
Griffin was initially kept of the Pirates’ opening day roster, but it didn’t take long for them to promote him. The 19-year-old also made a big statement in his first game.
The Pirates selected Griffin with the ninth pick in the 2024 MLB draft. After his first major league game, Griffin is hitting .333 with a 1.167 OPS.
Pittsburgh made some important moves last offseason, adding Ryan O’Hearn, Brandon Lowe and Marcell Ozuna to help supplement a roster with one of the best starting rotations in the league. Now that Griffin is part of the roster, there is even more to be excited about in the Steel City.
Griffin has a bright future ahead of him, and if he is as good as advertised, perhaps the Pirates can finally take the next step forward.
