Police were investigating a suspected murder-suicide involving a mother and son in Burlingame, near South Park, on Tuesday.
Officers and personnel from the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department said they responded around 7:40 p.m. Monday to reports of neighbors hearing gunshots in the 2400 block of San Marcos Avenue.
Police said they found a 51-year-old man with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head on the front porch of the residence and a handgun near him. He was taken by paramedics to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
An 83-year-old woman was also discovered inside the home with a “non-survivable” gunshot wound to her upper body. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
A preliminary investigation indicated the pair were mother and son and lived in the home together, the department said.
The motive for the shootings was unclear, but detectives from the department’s Homicide Unit were handling the investigation.
Authorities urged anyone with further information about the case to call the SDPD Homicide Unit at (619) 531-2293 or San Diego Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-8477.
