Red Sox complete Sonny Gray trade, send pitching prospect to Cardinals

The November deal that brought Gray to Boston is now complete.

The player to be named later in the Sonny Gray trade has been sent to the Cardinals, officially completing the deal between Boston and St. Louis.

The Red Sox sent right-handed pitcher Patrick Galle to the Cardinals on Monday. Boston sent pitchers Brandon Clarke and Richard Fitts along with the player to be named later to the Cardinals in exchange for Gray and cash considerations last November.

The Red Sox picked Galle out of Ole Miss in the 17th round of last year’s draft. The 6-foot-2, 225-pound right-handed pitcher turned 22 on Sunday. He began this season with Single A affiliate Salem.

Between this season and last season, Galle made four appearances for the RidgeYaks, totaling 7.1 innings of work. His ERA was 4.50 over those games.

Galle’s fastball topped out at 99 miles per hour in college, thought it usually is in the 95-97 range. He also throws a slider and cutter. He’s primarily a relief pitcher.

Gray, 36, is a three-time All-Star who finished second in the 2023 AL Cy Young voting. He is 1-0 this season with a 4.50 ERA through his first two starts. He gave up four runs in the Red Sox’ 6-5 loss to Cincinnati on March 28. He gave up two runs over six innings during the Red Sox’ 5-2 win against San Diego on Friday.

Gray’s next scheduled start is Tuesday night against the Brewers.
