Earthquake rattles San Ramon on New Year’s Day, latest in swarm

The quake struck at 4:58 p.m. and was centered near the Canyon Lakes Golf Course, the USGS said. There were no immediate reports of injuries or damage

The quake is the latest in a swarm of small shakes rattling the East Bay in the last month. Since early November, there have been more than 83 earthquakes in a roughly 1-mile radius around the town of San Ramon. The earthquakes, which geologists call a swarm, are small, ranging in size from 0.6 magnitude to the 4.0 quake that struck the area Dec. 19.
