Republican Florida Governor Ron DeSantis signed a bill on Monday to rename Palm Beach International Airport after President Donald Trump, a move sparking a flood of online reaction.
Newsweek reached out to the White House via email on Monday night for comment.
Why It Matters
The airport sees millions of travelers annually and renaming it for a sitting president underscores Trump’s political footprint in Florida and the broader national debate over honoring contemporary political figures.
The change would place Trump alongside other presidents with airports named in their honor and follows earlier Florida proposals to mark Trump’s ties to Palm Beach County.
What To Know
The measure designates the airport as Donald J. Trump International Airport, with a target effective date of July 1.
The renaming requires Federal Aviation Administration approval to update federal databases and references, and coordination with groups including the International Air Transport Association to pursue a new airport identifier, DJT.
Local outlet WPEC CBS12 News reported that the Florida Legislature previously advanced the proposal with an 81-30 vote in the House and included funding in the Senate budget for signage, branding and operational changes tied to the July 1 implementation.
DeSantis’ signing of the bill has elicited both positive and negative reactions.
Conservative influencer Nick Sortor said on X, “JUST IN — IT’S OFFICIAL: Palm Beach International Airport is now Donald J. Trump International Airport, following Gov. Ron DeSantis’ signature on HB919 The name change goes into effect on July 1st. Congrats, 47.”
