Skiing
Ski areas in Massachusetts and Vermont closed operations completely on Thursday.
With winter and spring conditions battling it out at ski resorts across New England this week, officials have been forced to adjust operations.
Ski resorts across the region have limited lift operations, discounted lift tickets, and even closed down completely on Thursday due to heavy rain and wind.
“We are in the midst of winter versus spring here with each one wanting to take hold on any given day,” wrote ski officials at Attitash Mountain Resort in Bartlett, N.H. in the resort’s morning snow report.
Mad River Glenn in Fayston, Vermont and Jiminy Peak in Hancock, Mass. both closed down completely on Thursday as a result of the weather.
“Due to last night’s high winds and heavy rainfall we have made the decision to suspend operations for today,” wrote ski officials at Mad River Glen in the resort’s morning snow report.
“Due to the weather, the mountain will not operate on Thursday, March 12th for the safety of our guests and staff, and to protect the snow by keeping groomer and skier traffic off of it,” wrote ski officials in the Jiminy Peak morning snow report.
New Hampshire’s Wildcat, which reported a weeklong warm spell and rain showers and 50 degree weather on Thursday, closed its Wildcat Express for the day and adjusted its prices.
“We have reduced lift ticket pricing to reflect our changes to terrain availability and appreciate your patience as we make smart decisions to preserve our fragile snowpack,” wrote Brandon Swartz, who serves as general manager of both Attitash and Wildcat, in the morning snow report.
Vermont’s Mount Snow posted the following alert across the top of its website on Thursday: “Weather challenges expected for Thursday 3/12.”
“We got heavy rain and now the temperature is dropping quickly,” Mount Snow officials wrote in the morning snow report. “Very high winds are also expected through midday and are likely to affect lift operations. Due to the wet snow and freeze-up timing, North Face will remain closed today, expected to reopen Friday.”
North Face, one of four distinct mountain faces at the resort, is known for its challenging trails and steep terrain.
Vermont’s Jay Peak decided to limit its lifts on Thursday.
“Due to high winds and the timing of the trails freezing up, we’re not able to run upper mountain lifts today,” wrote Jay Peak officials in the morning snow report.
Jay Peak, which has seen record-breaking snow this season, says more favorable skiing conditions are ahead for the weekend, with snow moving in later Friday and continuing through the weekend.
Several ski resorts noted that their teams are working hard to preserve the snow pack through the spring weather, but the amount of open terrain right now can be fluid.
Attitash officials refused to let the weather get them down.
“Every day looks and feels different from the last, but hey, the only constant in life is change, so bring that adventurous spirit and waterproof clothing, and come on out for a few laps (or many),” officials wrote.
