The staff working the ED at the Pittsburgh Trauma Medical Center is going to look a little different in The Pitt Season 3. Variety reports that star Supriya Ganesh is exiting the HBO Max show at the end of Season 2 and that Ayesha Harris is being upped to series regular in The Pitt Season 3. Ganesh has played empathetic and thoughtful Dr. Samira Mohan in The Pitt‘s first two seasons, while Harris has popped in both seasons as night shift Dr. Parker Ellis.
Variety writes that “[a]ccording to an individual with knowledge of the situation, Ganesh’s exit is a story-driven decision.” Residents routinely cycle in and out of the emergency department in hospitals. Much of Dr. Mohan’s storyline in The Pitt Season 2 has dealt with her anxiety about the future. Her plans to move home to New Jersey have been flummoxed by her mother’s impulsive decision to marry again and sell the family house. Mohan’s fears coalesce in The Pitt Season 2 Episode 10, when she has a panic attack that is derided by Dr. Robby (Noah Wyle) as a childish reaction to “mommy issues.”
“It just feels like she’s a little unmoored and she doesn’t really know what’s going on. It’s not going according to plan,” Ganesh told DECIDER last month.
Dr. Parker Ellis was one of the night shift doctors who arrived late in The Pitt Season 1 to assist the day shift with the onslaught of patients during the PittFest mass casualty event. She’s appeared again in Season 2 to offer Dr. Mel King (Taylor Dearden) advice ahead of her deposition. Ayesha Harris’s Dr. Ellis returns to The Pitt, along with other “night shift” characters like Dr. Jack Abbot (Shawn Hatosy), Dr. John Shen (Ken Kirby), and Dr. Cruz Henderson (Luke Tennie), in tonight’s episode.
While many fans have expressed hope for a spin-off or season focused on the night shift, it looks like next season will still take place during the daytime. Ayesha Harris confirmed on Instagram stories that Dr. Ellis would be pulling a double in The Pitt Season 3.

“Dr. ELLIS is pulling a double shift next season!! So excited ya’ll!!” Harris posted along with a screenshot of Variety’s article. “Bittersweet I won’t be working with my girl @supriyaganesh_.”
This isn’t the first time The Pitt has shuffled up its main cast in between seasons. Tracy Ifeachor exited the show after one season of playing Dr. Heather Collins. Sepideh Moafi was added to The Pitt Season 2 cast as Dr. Baran Al-Hashimi, Robby’s replacement for the duration of his impending sabbatical.
The Pitt returns tonight on HBO Max at 9 PM ET.
