A family’s drive to visit a relative who recently returned to Chicago turned sideways when a 12-year-old boy was grazed by a bullet Tuesday night in Austin, according to a police report.
The boy, his father and a 3-month-old girl had picked up his mother from her teaching job in the West Loop and were all in the vehicle around 6:50 p.m. in the 900 block of North Leamington Avenue when gunfire erupted, according to Chicago police reports obtained by the Sun-Times.
The boy’s mom told everyone to “duck down” and after the shooting the boy told his parents non-verbatim “I’m okay, but I’m bleeding,” the police report states.
He was taken to Loyola University Medical Center in Maywood with a fractured cranial bone and was in fair condition, police said.
Two people of interest were taken into custody by responding officers, officials said.
The boy’s father and a witness both declined to speak when reached by the Sun-Times.
