Gov. Ron DeSantis announced in North Miami Beach on Tuesday that millions of dollars in grants and aid would be awarded to restoring Biscayne Bay and coral reefs in Florida.
The governor said $20 million will be allotted for Biscayne Bay water quality improvement projects that “will support a total of eight projects, including six new projects and supplemental funding for two existing and expanding projects, and the recipients include Miami-Dade County, cities of South Beach, Homestead and Miami Beach, North Miami Beach water, and the town of Cutler Bay and Miami Shores Village.”
He said the projects include septic-to-sewer conversion and waste water storage projects “that will lead to improved water quality of Biscayne Bay.”
DeSantis said that brings the total funds awarded to this cause to $100 million since 2021.
He also announced $9.5 million for 11 projects that are part of Florida’s Coral Reef Restoration and Recovery Initiative.
The governor was joined by the Florida Department of Environmental Protection Secretary Alexis Lambert, among other leaders, officials said.
The news conference was held at the FIU Chaplin School of Hospitality & Tourism Management.
