get on the ground get on the ground.”
Jaquan Kelly is facing a disorderly conduct charge after police say he mule-kicked a door in a Hollywood apartment complex.
“It was just banging, all I heard was banging and yelling. I thought they were trying to knock down my door,” resident Bryan Idarraga said.
He said he and his family were home sleeping when he heard screaming, jolting him awake.
Idarraga said he heard someone say, “Just come out here, I’m going to kill you.”
“So I look through the peep hole and it was a guy just trying to kick down the door right in front of mine,” Idarraga said.
Kelly told police it was his girlfriend inside that apartment, that they had a fight and he was trying to get her to open up the door.
But neither Kelly nor his girlfriend are residents of the Cortland Hollywood Community. The suspect said his girlfriend had rented the place on Airbnb.
“I’m not happy about that,” Idarraga said about finding out the unit was rented. “We’ve never had issues in the past. We’ve been living here for about two years, but now that something like this happened, it’s a little alarming.”
Kelly was arrested and taken to the Broward County jail. He posted a $500 bond with an order of no return to the property.
Now neighbors say they’re on high alert and pushing for change.
“We’re gonna talk to the board and see how we can get this Airbnb out of here,” Idarraga said.
NBC6 reached out to the management team about whether they were aware that the apartment was being used as a vacation rental and what their next steps are in terms of safety measures. We still await a response.
