South Florida continues to represent at the 2026 Milan Cortina Winter Olympics, and not just for Team USA.
Jared Firestone was a late-comer to the sport of skeleton, having been introduced to it while in law school in New York. But the Hollywood native was always an athlete, having run track and field in high school at Pinecrest in Fort Lauderdale.
Now he’s in Cortina, Italy, living his dream and representing Israel.
“To come here and have all this setup, the sky cam and the drone following you, logos everywhere and in the ice even there are logos, it’s another moment it hits you, you can’t believe you’re here,” he said as he marveled at the skeleton track in Cortina.
How to watch Jared Firestone
Viewers can watch Firestone race on Friday.
His third of four runs is at 1:30 p.m. and the final run, the medal event, is at 3:05 p.m.
Jared Firestone selected as Israeli flag bearer
During the Opening Ceremony, cheers filled the Firestone home in Hollywood as family and friends gathered to watch their son, breather and friend carry the Israeli flag, which he described as an “honor.”
“It’s beyond words, so exciting, overwhelming. We are just so proud and the whole community has come together to support Jared,” said his mother, Karen Firestone.
“That was really the cherry on top when he told us he was selected to carry the Israeli flag, when I say that I get chills,” said his father, Mark Firestone.
Firestone’s parents flew to Italy to see him compete in the sport that has him racing down a track at upwards of 85 mph.
“We hear his name at the top, it sounds like a train is coming and we see this little white blur go by us and figure, that must’ve been him,” said Mark Firestone. “His face is 4 inches off the ice.”
Meanwhile, Firestone is pinching himself, soaking in every moment as an Olympian.
“I hope to have the best runs of my career, end on a really good note. I want to make everyone who is watching feel really proud,” he said.
