According to an arrest report, Miami Police had responded to a report of a man who stabbed his caregiver at an apartment building in the 200 block of Southwest 18th Court.
The victim was found bleeding profusely and given first aid before being taken to Mercy Hospital while Perez was detained.
Three kitchen knives were found in the bushes in front of the apartments, the report said.
The victim told investigators she was at the home to help her mother-in-law when Perez poked her in the back while holding a knife then swung the knife at her, hitting her on her left forearm, the report said.
A physical struggle ensued before a neighbor intervened and called police, the report said.
Perez told investigators he was involved in a verbal argument with the victim and said she grabbed him and he started stabbing her with a kitchen knife, the report said.
The report noted that Perez and the victim are in-laws and have known each other for about 42 years.
Perez was booked into jail and expected to appear in bond court on Friday.
