Nearly 1,000 placards have been revoked amid a crackdown on fraudulent disabled parking permits in Miami-Dade, the county’s tax collector said Tuesday.
In a statement, tax collector Dariel Fernandez said the placards were revoked pending a full review and final determination.
Fernandez said his office is sending letters to anyone with a fraudulently obtained or improperly issued disabled parking permit telling them they must be surrendered immediately.
Under Florida law, fraudulent permits can result in up to one year in jail, a $1,000 fine, or both, and individuals may be prohibited from obtaining a permit for four years.
An audit into temporary and permanent disabled parking permit applications filed within the last year is ongoing, Fernandez said.
“Let me be absolutely clear: any bad actor who abuses this system, exploits vulnerable individuals, or attempts to defraud the people of Miami-Dade County will face immediate investigation, enforcement, and full consequences under the law,” his statement read.
