Surveillance video captured the gunshots and horrified screams after a man in a wheelchair was shot and killed outside a birthday party in Sunrise.
Family identified the victim as 48-year-old Kendrick English, a former high school football legend who became paralyzed as a teen.
The surveillance captured the back-to-back gunshots early Sunday outside Five Stars Banquet Hall. Five gunshots can be heard, as well as the commotion afterward.
Loved ones said Kendrick English was kind and well-known in the community, and question how he could have been a threat to whoever shot him, since he lived with significant paralysis and used an electric wheelchair. NBC6’s Kim Wynne reports.
The community gathered for a second night Monday to remember English, who was a football star at Stranahan High School.
“He was a gentle soul, a peaceful soul. The last person I thought this would happen to,” friend Alexis Dorrell said.
Police arrested 26-year-old Francisco Sanchez in the shooting. He’s been charged with depraved and dangerous murder.
According to an arrest report, Sanchez was working as a private security guard at the venue for a birthday party.
Police said English was trying to get inside the party, but Sanchez denied him. The two got into an argument, and when English allegedly tried to get into the party a second time, Sanchez pulled out his gun and shot him multiple times.
Sanchez is being held in jail without bond.
