Spotify Wrapped is out and many fans noticed an unusual new feature in this year’s “story.” It’s called “listening age,” and the number might surprise you.
On Wednesday, the streaming giant unveiled its annual overview of individual listening trends, allowing users to see their top artists, songs, genres, albums and podcasts.
This year’s release offered a few new features like the introduction of “Top Albums,” a fan leaderboard to show users where they stack up in an artist’s streams and the “Listening Age” feature, which compares a user’s streaming habits to those in their age range.
There is also something called “Wrapped Party,” an interactive feature which allows users to compare their Wrapped with other Spotify users.
The Listening Age feature quickly took over social media as many users began reporting their age was significantly older or younger than their real age.
“Age is just a number. So don’t take this personally,” the Wrapped feature reads before revealing a user’s age.
How was the listening age calculated?
So how was it calculated?
According to the company, the Listening Age feature is “based on the idea of a ‘reminiscence bump,’ which is the tendency to feel most connected to the music from your younger years.”
The age was calculated using the following metrics, according to Spotify:
- First, it looks at the release dates of all of the songs you played this year.
- Next, it calculates the five-year span of music that you engaged with more than other listeners your age.
- Spotify hypothesized that this five-year span matches your “reminiscence bump,” assuming you were between 16 and 21 years old when those tracks were released. “For example, if you listen to way more music from the late 1970s than others your age, we playfully hypothesize that your ‘listening’ age is 63 today, the age of someone who would have been in their formative years in the late 1970s.”
How to find your Spotify Wrapped?
To see a personalized Wrapped page, users will need to have streamed at least 30 songs for more than 30 seconds each, and listened to at least five different artists throughout the year.
If that criteria has been met, the feature is free to users via the app.
“Just make sure your app is up-to-date and look for the Wrapped feed at the top of your Home screen or search ‘2025 Wrapped,'” the company said in a release.
